Heart disease is the general term used to describe problems with heart muscle, or any part of the heart, including valves, arteries and veins. Heart disease can cause poor cardiac flow, irregular heartbeat or heart attack.


Some people are born with heart disease (congenital heart disease). Some will develop as a result of a bacterial infection such as rheumatic fever, or as a result of High Blood Pressure and high cholesterol.

The problems with the arteries to the heart (atherosclerosis) can cause damage. A long list of diseases and conditions contribute to heart disease.


There are a number of cardiovascular diseases that originate in part by the diet that we use.
This includes atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries).

A diet characterized by high consumption of cholesterol and saturated fat can cause the disease and other types of heart disease.
We are what we eat.

Cholesterol accumulates in the arteries and fat floating in the bloodstream.
Gradually, the arteries become narrower and may obstruct blood flow to the heart.

Factors that increase the risk of heart damage include obesity, hypertension, elevated cholesterol and triglycerides, sedentary lifestyle (lack of physical activity), smoking and stress.
